There are two different ways to do so: 1\ufe0f\u20e3 integration and 2\ufe0f\u20e3 screening.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\"><em>Integration<\/em>\u00a0put simply, is when you take a specific ESG metric, such as carbon emissions \ud83c\udfed\ud83d\udca8 and try to estimate future impacts in your analysis. The world is moving towards reaching a \u2018net zero\u2019 and almost every country and company plan to reduce most of their carbon emissions. \ud83d\ude37<\/p><p><a class=\"magnific fr-fic fr-dib lightbox-image-container\" href=\"https:\/\/media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net\/asset\/26346452\/giphy__18_.gif?ixlib=rails-0.3.0&amp;auto=format\" data-effect=\"mfp-zoom-in\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"fr-fic fr-dib attachment aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net\/asset\/26346452\/giphy__18_.gif?ixlib=rails-0.3.0&amp;auto=format&amp;w=1400&amp;h=1400&amp;fit=max&amp;impolicy=ResizeCrop&amp;constraint=downsize&amp;aspect=fit\" alt=\"Sustainable investing\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" data-asset-id=\"26346452\" data-original-image=\"https:\/\/media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net\/asset\/26346452\/giphy__18_.gif?ixlib=rails-0.3.0&amp;auto=format\" \/><\/a><\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">One consequence is that companies emitting large amounts of CO2 through their production of goods are likely to be affected by a higher carbon price since companies need to buy CO2 certificates to offset their pollution. \ud83c\udf32\ud83c\udf33<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">If companies continue to emit constant CO2 amounts in spite of higher offsetting prices, the cost of offsetting is bound to increase, which will lead to decreasing profits. The company value would depreciate, leading to a lower share price. \ud83d\udcc9 All in all, implementing such metrics into your analysis can help you better assess risks and, ultimately, increase your return on investments. \ud83d\udc4f<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">Another way to approach sustainable finance is to do a\u00a0<em>screening<\/em>, where one applies filters to create a \u2018basket\u2019 of stocks or a specific stock index. These filters are based on your investment preferences, values, and ethics. \u2696\ufe0f \ud83c\udf0e<\/p><h3 dir=\"ltr\"><strong>There are different methods of filtering:<\/strong><\/h3><h3><a class=\"magnific fr-fic fr-dib lightbox-image-container\" href=\"https:\/\/media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net\/asset\/26346468\/giphy__19_.gif?ixlib=rails-0.3.0&amp;auto=format\" data-effect=\"mfp-zoom-in\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fr-fic fr-dib attachment aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net\/asset\/26346468\/giphy__19_.gif?ixlib=rails-0.3.0&amp;auto=format&amp;w=1400&amp;h=1400&amp;fit=max&amp;impolicy=ResizeCrop&amp;constraint=downsize&amp;aspect=fit\" alt=\"Thematic investing\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" data-asset-id=\"26346468\" data-original-image=\"https:\/\/media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net\/asset\/26346468\/giphy__19_.gif?ixlib=rails-0.3.0&amp;auto=format\" \/><\/a><\/h3><p dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udc49\u00a0<em>Negative screening<\/em>\u00a0is used to exclude \u2018bad\u2019 stocks, also called sin stocks, from your further analysis. It should be noted, however, that negative screening can hinder your performance and reduce diversification.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udc49 With<em>\u00a0<\/em><em>positive screening<\/em>\u00a0(also referred to as best-in-class screening \ud83c\udf1f), you simply select a sustainability metric and benchmark all companies in a sector. You then proceed with your analysis using only the companies that perform best according to your metric.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udc49\u00a0<em>Norms-based screening<\/em>\u00a0is used to exclude anything that does not meet certain minimum standards such as \u2018ILO\u2019, \u2018the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises\u2019 or the \u2018UN Global Compact\u2019.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">We hope you now have a clearer picture of what sustainable investing is. \ud83d\udcb0\ud83c\udf31 So let&#8217;s jump into the next investment method.<\/p><h2 dir=\"ltr\">Thematic investing &#8230;<\/h2><p dir=\"ltr\">is another way to buy shares or other investments that benefit from a certain trend. This trend does not necessarily have to be related to sustainability or social issues. \ud83e\udd37\u200d\u2640\ufe0f It can range from hydrogen and electric cars to remote working and meat alternatives. It may also involve higher risk, as investments are concentrated in one industry or sector, potentially leading to increased volatility.<\/p><h2 dir=\"ltr\">Impact investing &#8230;<\/h2><p dir=\"ltr\">is a term that first appeared in 2007. It should be noted that impact investing is not a protected term and different definitions exist. One of the most widely recognized definitions is that of the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN). \ud83d\udcd6 It defines impact investing as investments specifically aimed to address social or environmental challenges (e.g. education, clean energy, and healthcare). \ud83d\udc93 It can therefore be seen as a subset of thematic investing.
