Us too, so let&#8217;s explore those new guidelines! \ud83e\udd13<\/p><p><a class=\"magnific fr-fic fr-dib lightbox-image-container\" href=\"https:\/\/media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net\/asset\/28237422\/giphy__17_.gif?ixlib=rails-0.3.0&amp;auto=format\" data-effect=\"mfp-zoom-in\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"fr-fic fr-dib attachment aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net\/asset\/28237422\/giphy__17_.gif?ixlib=rails-0.3.0&amp;auto=format&amp;w=1400&amp;h=1400&amp;fit=max&amp;impolicy=ResizeCrop&amp;constraint=downsize&amp;aspect=fit\" alt=\"EU Sustainable Finance Taxonomy\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" data-asset-id=\"28237422\" data-original-image=\"https:\/\/media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net\/asset\/28237422\/giphy__17_.gif?ixlib=rails-0.3.0&amp;auto=format\" \/><\/a><\/p><h3 dir=\"ltr\">Okay, I\u2019m listening\u2026<\/h3><p dir=\"ltr\">Well, the taxonomy (i.e. classification) establishes\u00a0<u>fou<\/u><u>r<\/u>\u00a0core requirements that economic activities must meet to be considered sustainable.\u267b\ufe0f\ud83d\udcd7 The four conditions to be met, are the following:<\/p><ol><li dir=\"ltr\"><p dir=\"ltr\">Contribute substantially to one or more of the environmental objectives identified in the Taxonomy regulation \ud83d\udcaa<\/p><\/li><li dir=\"ltr\"><p dir=\"ltr\">Not do significant harm to any of the EU environmental objectives \ud83d\ude45\u200d\u2640\ufe0f<\/p><\/li><li dir=\"ltr\"><p dir=\"ltr\">Meet minimum social safeguards to ensure its sustainability \ud83c\udfaf<\/p><\/li><li dir=\"ltr\"><p dir=\"ltr\">Comply with technical screening criteria established by the EU \ud83d\udda5<\/p><\/li><\/ol><p dir=\"ltr\">The fourth requirement refers to a huge document of specific criteria that the EU has set out for each specific industry to align with the taxonomy. \ud83d\ude2e\u200d\ud83d\udca8 It\u2019s a very in-depth and hyper-advanced manual for sustainability \u2013 if you want to explore it, you can read more about it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/publications\/210803-sustainable-finance-platform-technical-screening-criteria-taxonomy-report_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>here<\/u><\/a>. \ud83d\udcd6 The other points of the taxonomy are less advanced, but still remain of interest and aim at clarifying what the EU actually means by \u201c<em>environmental objectives<\/em>\u201d and \u201c<em>safeguards<\/em>\u201d. \ud83c\udf33\u26d1 Can\u2019t come up with a good explanation of what this means? Well then let\u2019s start with the former!<\/p><p><a class=\"magnific fr-fic fr-dib lightbox-image-container\" href=\"https:\/\/media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net\/asset\/28237537\/giphy__18_.gif?ixlib=rails-0.3.0&amp;auto=format\" data-effect=\"mfp-zoom-in\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fr-fic fr-dib attachment aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net\/asset\/28237537\/giphy__18_.gif?ixlib=rails-0.3.0&amp;auto=format&amp;w=1400&amp;h=1400&amp;fit=max&amp;impolicy=ResizeCrop&amp;constraint=downsize&amp;aspect=fit\" alt=\"Sustainable economy\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" data-asset-id=\"28237537\" data-original-image=\"https:\/\/media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net\/asset\/28237537\/giphy__18_.gif?ixlib=rails-0.3.0&amp;auto=format\" \/><\/a><\/p><h3 dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Environmental objectives<\/strong><\/h3><p dir=\"ltr\">The six environmental objectives are listed as follows: \ud83d\udc40<\/p><ol><li dir=\"ltr\"><p dir=\"ltr\">Climate change mitigation<\/p><\/li><li dir=\"ltr\"><p dir=\"ltr\">Climate change adaptation<\/p><\/li><li dir=\"ltr\"><p dir=\"ltr\">The sustainable use and protection of water and marine resources<\/p><\/li><li dir=\"ltr\"><p dir=\"ltr\">The transition to a circular economy<\/p><\/li><li dir=\"ltr\"><p dir=\"ltr\">Pollution prevention and control<\/p><\/li><li dir=\"ltr\"><p dir=\"ltr\">The protection and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems<\/p><\/li><\/ol><p><a class=\"magnific fr-fic fr-dib lightbox-image-container\" href=\"https:\/\/media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net\/asset\/28237555\/giphy__19_.gif?ixlib=rails-0.3.0&amp;auto=format\" data-effect=\"mfp-zoom-in\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fr-fic fr-dib attachment aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net\/asset\/28237555\/giphy__19_.gif?ixlib=rails-0.3.0&amp;auto=format&amp;w=1400&amp;h=1400&amp;fit=max&amp;impolicy=ResizeCrop&amp;constraint=downsize&amp;aspect=fit\" alt=\"Environmental objectives\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" data-asset-id=\"28237555\" data-original-image=\"https:\/\/media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net\/asset\/28237555\/giphy__19_.gif?ixlib=rails-0.3.0&amp;auto=format\" \/><\/a><\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">In order for a business to make a \u201csubstantial contribution\u201d to one of the objectives, it has to fulfill at least one of the following three conditions:<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">1\ufe0f\u20e3 making a direct contribution (e.g. solar energy producers make a \u00a0positive impact on the environment by providing a sustainable energy alternative);<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">2\ufe0f\u20e3 enabling other activities to make sustainable contributions through their own activities (such as providing electric buses for public transportation) or;<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">3\ufe0f\u20e3 being involved in transition activities, where a company may not be able to operate at low carbon levels, but still maintains to be among the most sustainable for industry&#8217;s standards \u00a0( e.g. a plastic producer using recycled materials).<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">So, in order for an activity to be\u00a0sustainable\u00a0according to the EU taxonomy, it must contribute to at least 1 of the three environmental objectives\u00a0and\u00a0do no harm to any of the other objectives. \ud83d\ude0c In addition to this, it must meet the minimum safeguards. \ud83d\ude01<\/p><h3 dir=\"ltr\"><strong>So, now what are the minimum safeguards? \ud83e\udd28<\/strong><\/h3><p dir=\"ltr\">The safeguards refer to guidelines set out by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (the OECD) and the United Nations (the UN). Specifically, a business must follow the\u00a0<em>OECD\u2019s Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises\u00a0<\/em>and the\u00a0<em>UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights<\/em>.\u261d\ufe0f These two sets of recommendations are in place to promote responsible business conduct and human rights. \ud83d\ude4c\u2764\ufe0f<\/p><p><a class=\"magnific fr-fic fr-dib lightbox-image-container\" href=\"https:\/\/media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net\/asset\/28237596\/giphy__21_.gif?ixlib=rails-0.3.0&amp;auto=format\" data-effect=\"mfp-zoom-in\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"fr-fic fr-dib attachment aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net\/asset\/28237596\/giphy__21_.gif?ixlib=rails-0.3.0&amp;auto=format&amp;w=1400&amp;h=1400&amp;fit=max&amp;impolicy=ResizeCrop&amp;constraint=downsize&amp;aspect=fit\" alt=\"Impactful investment\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" data-asset-id=\"28237596\" data-original-image=\"https:\/\/media1-production-mightynetworks.imgix.net\/asset\/28237596\/giphy__21_.gif?ixlib=rails-0.3.0&amp;auto=format\" \/><\/a><\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">If this all seems very technical, that\u2019s because it is! \ud83d\ude14 Luckily, though, we as \u201cnormal\u201d retail investors don\u2019t have to worry too much about the laws and definitions \u2013 that\u2019s on the companies! \ud83d\ude46\u200d\u2640\ufe0f For us, it becomes identifiable if a large EU-based company is sustainable or not simply by whether or not they identify their activities as sustainable. Why is that? Well, if they advertised themselves as sustainable but didn\u2019t meet the EU conditions to do so, they\u2019d be doing so illegally! \ud83e\udd73\ud83e\udd29 Therefore, with the EU Taxonomy, we are at less risk of being tricked by greenwashing. \ud83e\udd25 In other words, it is much easier for us to invest with impact and avoid scams! \ud83e\udd74<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">Now you know everything you need to know about the EU Taxonomy.
